DARKNESS FLASHLIGHT MAKE THE GAME
THE FLASHLIGHT: DOOM 3 is not the blast that DOOM was but makes DOOM look like a picnic. Best playing moment was moving the flashlight everywhere in the hope NOT to find anything to shot at. I added flashlights to some weapons but the game lost ambient and I removed the mod. I kept a mod that improved sound on weapons though.
MY BEST PART: The beginning. After having met all the nice chaps we walk through a scenery nice and mopped turned havoc. Those first playing moments have a tension built I've never experienced in a game before.
ALSO: Reading the PDA's mails and listening to the audio reports was bizarre. A lot of details build up the atmosphere. Steam, the frightened guy curled up that won't move, being able to pick up a corpse and incinerate it. The monorail drive is impressive after so much time inside. Also the sand storms, probably deadly, but wishing to be out there instead. I sneaked every corner and kept going back through the aisles picking up health and armor... very creepy. I punched all corpses to bits in order to reduce stress (mine). The EnPro Plant was too much for me and I had to interrupt the daily session before time.
BUT: ...but Communications was MY turning point and the game got tiresome. I kept playing till the end though. The fright mood never left, but I became careless about the marine's health, thinking of how many corners were left till the next level, instead of enjoying the moment. New weapons and monsters did not help. The general attitude was: Heck, here we go again... thus probing you can get used to Hell.
MAY BE: A companion (female) would had been nice in order to avoid an ulcer in the first stages. The sentries are a relief. Their laser guns could have been a nice add-on to the weaponry.
A NOTE OF ADVICE: At the beginning I had problems sleeping. Probably due to a higher adrenaline flow. Don't rely too much on the Quicksave. Game crashing may damage the slot and I had to redo levels three times. Don't play in front of kids, nephews, infants or any of those. If they get contaminated by DOOM 3 move them fast to nursery games like DOOM, when everything was sunny and life was good.
ALTOGETHER: The kick I got from this game was very intense until it faded. Although the game has no replay value to me, I enjoyed the DOOM 3 hype, the game itself and the Amazon reviews... I'll vote to drop the Cacodemons. These monsters don't match the game and never have. I also felt pretty stupid with a smokey chainsaw. In computer games I expect more graphic beauty than plot. I'm OK with DOOM3.
