Three words...too damn dark.
Three words...too damn dark. You know what would save this game? A patch to lighten it even more and make gamma adjustments. Next stop, ID software to suggest it. The light option they have now is crapola. And I'm NOT raising my monitor brightness to play.
Only made 4 stars because it does make me jump sometimes. Not like trying to peer around corners of my monitor, as in the original DOOM, but adequate. More like 3.5 stars.
I enjoyed the familiar techno-theme. Walking these "Halls of Doom" somewhat reminded me of the techno-horror of the first. It is like finally being able to walk those halls yourself in hi-def. Seems like they used some of the same type of textures. Nice nostalgic touch!
When I first saw that 4 footed beastie with the mechanical legs, I knew I was in trouble. What is it about technology on demons that is so frightful?
Only playing for 2 days and I keep hoping the lighting will get better. You can't play what you can't see, even with a flashlite. In short, wonderful engine and technology, but doesn't do a damn for the game if you can't see it!
My new computer I hand-built to play DOOM 3 in particular:
* Intel D925XEcv2 motherboard
* Pentium 4 3.2 HT on 800MHz front side bus.
* 1.5 GB DDR4 RAM.
* 80 GB SATA HD @ 10,000 rpm
* EVGA GeForce 6800 Ultra pci-e 16x.
* Antec case with tru550 watt power supply.
* Windows XP Pro SP2
Playing at 1024x768 with everything on. Nice smooth play. 1280x1024 was also good with some choppiness so I lowered the rez. Not sure if the choppiness or lighting was giving me a headache. The graphics are incredible. Even the flashlite shines realistically. Pity you can't see most of it.
Avid DOOMers will deal with it. Others will give up.
