I am not an avid gamer with an over-built PC. I play these games more as a hobby or means of escape rather than a way of life. I just don't have that kind of time. Far cry is a great game to lose yourself in. The maps are expansive and, with the right video card, full of detail. There are 5 disks to installation. As far as the CD-R/DVD-R issue stated in some of the other reviews is concerned, I did not have that problem. I have a single 48x CD-R through which I installed the game without issue. Not sure what their problem is.
If you think your PC can't handle the game, some fairly inexpensive and simple upgrades may be in order. RAM is really cheap now. I upgraded from 512MB DDR 2700 to 1GB DDR 3200 for $100. The minimum requirement is 256. A memory upgrade also helps a great deal with running multiple memory-intensive programs simultaneously. You can never have too much memory. The other upgrade is, for obvious reasons, a video card. You can get a Sapphire ATI RADEON 9800SE video card from NEWEGG.COM right now for $115. This will make a significant difference in game play especially if you are currently relying on "on-board" video. Considering gamers spend upwards of $500 to $600 on top-of-the-line video cards, $115 is pretty damn cheap. This game auto configs itself based on your system specs. I have a 2.8GHz P4, 1GB DDR, 64MB video card (min req'd) and 19" Sony LCD. On installation, the game set all graphic detail to low and a resolution of 640x480. I set a few things to medium and the res to 800x600 and it ran the game just fine. No hang ups, crashes, etc. Even on medium to low settings the game looks great. Real gamers expect to run games at their full potential. Regular hobby gamers like myself can live with a little less detail in our games. The only question is...
how serious do you take your gaming?
