This game requires a lot of patience
Let's face it. We, as americans, are fairly impatient like most rich countries. We are driven by work, efficiency, and very high standards when it comes to careers and monetary gains invested in as little time as possible. If you don't believe me, try sitting on a green light for 0.3 seconds and you'll hear a car honk behind you. Japan's culture likes to have patience. To have patience in Japan means that greater rewards are brewing, though unforseen to the naked eye at the imminent moment. This is probably why the game in America doesn't fare well due to the cultural differences. We tend to have short attention spans and limited patience when it comes to gaming/entertainment because we work so hard in our real lives...why should we "work" in a game, right?
The time you invest in this game will NOT go unnoticed. Due to the competition of searching for parties, looking for mobs to fight with, making money, etc. makes you smarter and keener. You learn how to be the cream of the crop. Most importantly, you learn how to be patient. In the end, your achievements resulting from this patience gathers respect and a sense of achievement.
