Mac version installs, plays fine
Been noticing the complaints from people who say the game won't run on their computers. Odds are these are Windows users. I just installed this on my Mac Mini 1.45 GHz G4, and it plays fine. However, it is such a resource hog even at that level that occasionally, after I save, it will crash from the main menu. But I haven't had any in-game crashes, nor have I had problems with this anti-piracy software rendering the whole thing unplayable.
The game, to be brief, is visually dazzling. Now I'm not the biggest puzzle-hound on Earth, so I did find some of the puzzles maddening (Spire Age would have been utterly bewildering without a walkthrough) but after a while I caught on and needed the walkthrough less and less. The story becomes more and more compelling too, once you get used to the unforgiving difficulty of the puzzles and can follow along with it more carefully.
But I'm floored by the design of the game. Serenia especially is stunning to behold, with music by Jack Wall that, at its best, rivals Howard Shore's score for Lord of the Rings. I want a CD of this.
If you don't think you'll have installation problems (chalk up one more reason to switch to Mac), and are looking for a breathtaking journey into some truly dreamlike worlds, Myst IV is worth the ride. If your computer isn't up to the task, though, I guess XBox would be the next best thing.
