BAH -- I should have just watched Star Wars 4 more times
Even though the Republic Commando's gameplay reminds me of the original "Dark Forces" -- straight up, mission-based, blow-em-up destruction -- this game can't stand on its own. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty fun for how short it was... but I want more for my hard-earned $50.
For starters, dead baddies don't stick around on the floor to obstruct the path of friends and foes, but you can trip over the dead wookies and other obstacles that the game deems important enough to provide sniping cover? Come on, Lucasarts -- my processor can handle the extra droid chunks! Also, if I launch a rocket at a Geonesian egg, the creature inside better well start screaming and burst into flames... what's left of it, anyway. On medium difficulty, weapons appear in quantities and types specific to what you're about to run into nearby; so you can guess what's coming up in the next room. I think this handicap is there because the standard assualt rifle (your main weapon) is pretty weak and goes through rounds like crazy. The rechargeable blaster packs a bigger punch and has greater accuracy!
I'm not going to drop a spoiler here, but it's pretty obvious that Lucasarts wants to make this into a series of games. $50, $50, $50. I'll pass. I'm glad that Lucasarts finally decided there was more to the Star Wars universe than just lightsaber fighting and quicksaves; kudos in that regard, but they continue to ignore the attraction for some people to play the single player, storyboard game and not just the multiplayer one. How about this: you can refund me for the version I don't want to play, and that would be about right... please make your check out to... :)
