Sim addict is disappointed
After playing all of the original Sim expansions with tons and tons of goodies off the Internet, I finally broke down and got Sims 2 like a good little EA consumer. It's just as fun as the original Sims in playing, but overall, I'm very disappointed on what comes in the box.
I had forgotten how limited the original Sims was, before the expansions added more wallpapers, outfits, careers, pets, etc. With the basic Sims 2, I'm back to step one of Simming: basic ugly stuff, most of which doesn't match. (OK, pretend I'm an official Maxis game designer and I make some floors. Why don't I make wallpapers that match??) I'm also disappointed in the careers (yawn). This game is just basically the original Sims on graphical steroids.
The good side of this is that the graphics are quite amazing, and the little movie sequences for WooHoo and having babies are fun (once). There may be others that I have not yet discovered. The genetic stuff is entertaining, but Sims age very quickly so the whole baby/toddler/child/teen thing goes pretty fast. My first girl was out of her teens before I could figure out how to meet half of her interesting new aspirations. [You can slow down the aging rate with either a cheat or with an elixer (which can also speed up the rate if you are not careful with its use).]
The aspirations are one fun new thing. When one of my 'fortune-oriented' sims lost his job on his very first day of existence, he lost his mind & ran around doing a chicken dance, much to my amusement. But since then, his aspirations center on buying stuff... and with such a small, unexciting catalog of stuff to buy, that gets boring very quickly. Aspirations for the others are sometimes easier, sometimes harder to meet, which does add an interesting dimension to the game.
At any rate, I'll be looking for more expansion thingies on the Internet asap, and now the new University expansion is out with more features. I'll give it a try but if it's doesn't add enough new content, I'll just go back to my 2-D Sims and all their fabulous toys.
